OBSERVE / REASON / EXPLAIN

Clinicopathological correlation

Explain how a pathology report informs a clinical case.

Original teaching scenario / OSCE

Your practical station

A report does not explain a persistent clinical finding. Explain how you would review sample adequacy and arrange senior discussion.

Recognise and interpret

A report describes sampled tissue; interpretation depends on whether the sample represents the lesion and fits the clinical picture.

1

Review

Read specimen site, adequacy and diagnostic wording.

2

Correlate

Compare the report with the history and examination.

3

Resolve uncertainty

Discuss discordant or inadequate results with the responsible teams.

At the viva table

Try answering aloud, then open the suggested answer. Examiner questions vary.

01 / Does a small sample represent every part of a lesion?

Not necessarily. Sampling limitations matter.

02 / What does clinicopathological correlation mean?

Interpreting tissue findings together with clinical information.

03 / Should a discordant result be ignored?

No. It requires appropriate review.

04 / Is a provisional differential a confirmed diagnosis?

No. State the level of certainty.
