OBSERVE / REASON / EXPLAIN

Newborn observation station

Organise a supervised assessment of a newborn’s condition and feeding concerns.

Original teaching scenario / OSCE

Your practical station

A caregiver reports that a newborn has become less interested in feeding. Explain your assessment and escalation priorities in a supervised station.

Recognise and interpret

Newborn assessment is age- and context-specific; abnormal appearance or function may need prompt escalation.

  • Review birth and feeding history
  • Observe breathing, activity and colour
  • Assess temperature and hydration appropriately
1

Context

Ask about birth, gestation, feeding and urine/stool history.

2

Observe

Describe objective findings without relying on a score alone.

3

Escalate

Identify concerns and communicate promptly through the neonatal pathway.

At the viva table

Try answering aloud, then open the suggested answer. Examiner questions vary.

01 / Can poor feeding be important in a newborn?

Yes. It can signal illness and warrants appropriate assessment.

02 / Is adult physiology a suitable reference for all neonatal observations?

No. Use neonatal age-appropriate standards.

03 / Why include the caregiver’s concerns?

They may reveal a meaningful change from the baby’s usual behaviour.

04 / Does a normal single observation exclude illness?

No. Assess the whole clinical picture and reassess as needed.
