OBSERVE / REASON / EXPLAIN

Study model assessment

Organise a review of orthodontic study models.

Original teaching scenario / OSCE

Your practical station

An examiner provides study models with a missing posterior segment. Explain what can be described and which measurements may be unreliable.

Recognise and interpret

Models record dental arch relationships but must be interpreted with the clinical history and other records.

1

Check records

Confirm identity, completeness and the recorded relationship.

2

Inspect arches

Describe alignment, spacing, crowding and arch form.

3

Relate

Compare interarch findings with the clinical assessment.

At the viva table

Try answering aloud, then open the suggested answer. Examiner questions vary.

01 / Why confirm model identity?

Records must correspond to the correct patient and date.

02 / Can a damaged cast be assumed to preserve accurate dimensions?

No. Damage may limit measurement.

03 / Does crowding alone determine treatment?

No. Multiple dental, skeletal, soft-tissue and patient factors matter.

04 / Why record limitations?

They prevent overinterpretation of incomplete records.
