OBSERVE / REASON / EXPLAIN

Imaging request and systematic review

State a focused imaging question and describe a structured first review of an authorised image.

Original teaching scenario / OSCE

Your practical station

A teaching request asks only for “scan for pain.” Explain what information you would clarify and how you would begin reviewing the resulting study.

Recognise and interpret

An examination should be justified by its clinical question and interpreted after checking identity, technique and limitations.

  • Confirm patient, date and modality
  • Review quality and relevant comparison
  • Use a systematic search pattern
1

Request

Explain the question and relevant history instead of asking for a scan without context.

2

Check

Verify identity, side, projection or sequence and image quality.

3

Report

Describe observations, uncertainty and need for specialist review.

At the viva table

Try answering aloud, then open the suggested answer. Examiner questions vary.

01 / Does a technically poor image reliably exclude disease?

Not necessarily; acknowledge limitations.

02 / Why review previous imaging?

Change over time can affect interpretation and avoid unnecessary repetition.

03 / Can an incidental finding be ignored automatically?

No. Consider its relevance and the appropriate follow-up pathway.

04 / Does a single image replace the radiology report?

No. Interpret within the complete study and clinical context.
